Movie Clip Viewing and Reflection: Finish

Looking back at the beginning of the novel, describe 3 events that are examples of magical realism in "January" and "February." How would these be filmed? What important images do you think would have to be present? Costumes? Props? Music? As we watch a few scenes, jot down notes on how the scene was actually filmed. What is similar or different from your expectations? Log observations on the film handout.

Metaphors

What is a metaphor? How is food used metaphorically in Like Water for Chocolate?
With a partner, complete the graphic organizer with 3 examples and explanations of food being used as a metaphor in the book.

Homework

  • Read and complete the questions for chapter 5, "May." Quiz Monday on Chapters 4-6. All questions will be due then!

  • Also, you will need a recipe for a food that is important in your family traditions. Talk to your family! Bring in a recipe by Monday. We will be writing process narratives very similar to the chapters in the book that incorporate your recipe into a narrative about a family gathering.

  • Journals due Monday!
